West Coast Valentine

(high res version)

I know that Valentine’s day is a Hallmark holiday designed to fuel people to spend $$$.
I’ve heard many people argue that your loving appreciation should extend beyond February 14 (I agree with this).
Bla bla bla bla at the end of the day, I’m aware of how naive it may seem for me to be celebrating Valentine’s day through this comic.

All I have to say for myself is that…I’m in love.
Despite the fact that I took the long route home (“long” is an understatement…in 2011 I travelled Peru, Australia, Fiji, Canada, back to Australia, Brunei, Thailand, back to Australia, then several countries around Western Europe), I’ve fallen back in love with my home: the misty, grandiose West Coast. Oh yeah, I’ve also managed to fall in love proper (with a person, durr). I guess that’s something else worth noting….

Seems like ideal timing that Valentine’s Day is around the bend.
So here’s to my swelling heartstrings!

Sidenote: this comic was actually inspired by an exercise suggested by Scott McCloud. The objective was to depict a theme in 9 panels without dialogue or characters. The theme I chose was “serenity” and as it happens, some of my happiest, most ‘serene’ memories involve nature and cuddling. Haha! I’m a sucker, what can I say.
