Sketch: Korean Countryside – Azalea Flowers

This was extremely therapeutic to paint!

There’s something so grounding about nature… Continuing to develop my understanding of rural Korea. In the springtime, the Korean countryside gets flooded by vivid pink Azaleas (진달래).

Building upon some tips from Dice Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo’s Schoolism course on Colour and Light, I tried to bear in mind the type of lighting ‘exposure’ I wanted to achieve for this painting. I tried to maintain an ‘overexposed’ look as you can see from the washed out sky and skyline. Overall, I think this practise helped to make the painting look more cohesive and readable.
